Some projects, home and otherwise, I’ve either finished or have promised Laura I will finish soon.

The Basement:

Text Box: This is, by far, the largest-scale project I’ve ever taken on. When finished, we’ll have about 850 sq. feet added to our house. Since it’s a walk-out, I’m keeping it open as one large room with a bar and half wall to create two distinct spaces. I started this in May ’07 and anticipate finishing by the end of June ’08. The project includes a full bath.

My living room fireplace:

Text Box: When we moved into our new house, it was going to cost us an arm and a leg to get the type of mantle and hearth that we wanted for our fireplace. Laura, as always, was patient enough to let me trash our living room for the time it took. Notice how a stereo cabinet is going to be my next priority.
There was nothing but drywall around the fireplace, which had to go in order to get a foundation for the backerboard which provides a foundation for the slate tile. I had to chisel out the generic tile that was on the floor in front of the fireplace.
Two other challenges were/are how to run 12 and 14 gauge speaker wire for my front and rear right speakers. Most likely, they will be channeled under the carpet and hug the tile line on the floor. I still have yet to figure out a good way to run the component video cable from the receiver to the back of the television.

Tile: Slate
Wood: Solid Oak

Mrs. Anderson’s Science Room Loft:

Text Box: The Girl Scout troop here at Walden donated the funds for a loft for Mrs. Anderson’s Science room. It’s free-standing, but probably weighs close to a thousand pounds. Each of the two platforms is one-inch MDF sitting on top of a 2x6 frame with three 2x6 horizontal support joists. Because all the 4x4 posts I could find were treated, I bolted two 2x4’s together to make each of the four seven-foot posts. The platforms are secured to the posts via two opposing 8” lag bolts at each corner.
The rails on the top deck are 2x4’s sitting on a 2x6 frame. The palings are split 2x4’s double-screwed at each end. Various lengths of deck screws were used.
Mrs. Anderson did all the painting and decorating to make it look pretty. Carpeting was professionally installed.
