News from Mrs. Koch
May 16, 2008
I’m looking forward to seeing many, if not all of
you at the Walden Auction tomorrow night.
The auction is always fun and such a great way to support and benefit
our school.
Language Arts:
We finished our last theme in our reading program
this week. Next week we will be
reviewing our Alphafriends and reading and writing
our word wall words. Please, please, please read and write
with your child this summer. The
writing is just as important as the reading.
Encourage them to keep writing in their Journals. They can do it on their own and use their
best guess spelling along with what they have learned about phonics. I will be sending home a list of the word
wall words for reading and writing practice during the summer.
Math:
We have been working on place value and time this
week. We did some activities meant to
deepen your child’s understanding of place value using craft sticks to
represent 10s and 1s. We also practiced
skip counting by fives and tens.
Practice skip counting this summer with your child using money. It would be a great way to review skip
counting as well as money value and coin recognition. We also started “Time” this week. In kindergarten we introduce time but do not
expect the children to master it.
Children will be learning to tell time in grades 1-3. This week our focus was on the hour hand and
developing an understanding of how long an hour is. We made individual clocks using paper plates
(just like you did in kindergarten or first grade). We only put on the hour hand and next week we
will add the minute hand. We practiced
writing numbers 1-110; another activity that would benefit your child this
summer.
